Borek lies around 6 km north-east of the centre of České Budějovice. In 2025, it had a population of about 1,585.

Borek began developing as a settlement in 1805, was first recorded in 1820 under the name Na Bídě, and has been an independent municipality since 1954. A former Schwarzenberg coaching inn stands in the village; it is a Neoclassical building dating from 1815–1816. The Borek natural swimming area opened in July 2014.
